CAZA BJJ Sunshine Coast Championship 2020

On Sunday 18th October the CAZA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition team got down to business at the third last Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Circuit (QBJJC) comp for 2020. We sent a total of 28 competitors to what was a long day of BJJ for all concerned.

Because of the COVID plan in force, spectators numbers were limited to one adult per child or one person per adult competitor. The kids rolled in the morning session with the adults coming back in after the venue was closed for a short time for cleaning. Unfortunately, this meant that not everyone who would like to have attended to support their team could do so. Let’s hope these limitations are lifted in 2021 and the full comp day atmosphere can return.

CAZA kid’s results

Right from the opening minutes of this year’s championship, CAZA BJJ was on show with Kayden Koh competing in no-gi. As expected he got us off to a great start with a win and then going on to secure the gold. From there the medals just kept coming.

It was great to see some of the kids compete for the first time. Kids BJJ is always exciting to watch on comp day, regardless of the results. Of course, some are young teenagers that have significant competition experience. Couple this with youthful enthusiasm and you have a recipe for some explosive rolls.

Kids want to win as much as anyone, however, Yoshi and Sam are happy just to see them out there testing themselves. Medals are a bonus, it’s the experience that is priceless.

CAZA had competitors at each belt level including coach Cheyne Douglas rolling at black belt. Right behind him was big Marc Jenkins rolling in his first comp at brown belt. If you haven’t seen these two roll in competition yet, put it on your to-do list for 2021.

It was tough for our coaches too as we had up to three CAZA team members rolling at the same time on several occasions. You can’t help but feel proud of our club when you see three of the four mats featuring competitors wearing a CAZA gi, rashie or comp team badge.

Overall team results

Yet again we punched above our weight winning third place for three of the four team trophies on offer. Third is an impressive result considering we were a single gym going up against franchised or multi-branch gyms with significantly more competitor numbers than we can put forward.

Cross your fingers for 2021

With the worst of the lockdown restrictions now behind us (hopefully) we can look forward to the 2021 Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition season with more optimism. While the QBJJC remains our main focus as a team, other organisations are putting on tournaments which you may like to attend.

If you are not yet registered to compete or have let your memberships expire, it may be a good idea to renew or register in early January. Don’t leave it until the last minute to get your registrations sorted as there are often small delays in processing. Once registered, you can sign-up for any competition via the Smoothcomp system under team CAZA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Australia.
